Staining: The ferrous oxide determines the staining factor which is determined on a scale of 1 to 5; 1 being the most prominent, 5 being non-visible. The scale of 4 to 5 is the acceptable level. All our sand falls into the scale of 5 on all materials except Nylon and Polyester which falls into the 4 to 5 range. This is a most important consideration as certain iron stains will ruin clothes.

Particle size: The particle size should fall into the following range; trace 1 mm down to trace 63 micron with the majority falling in the 355 to 125 micron range. The grain shape should be sub-rounded to avoid abrasion. This is very important should the sand particle get into to the eye as it can be easily washed out. Particle size also plays an important part in the moulding characteristics of the sand, enhancing its qualities as a play material.
